Lois Major, a longtime resident of Queen’s Road, Nassau East discussed the problem in an interview with The Tribune yesterday.
“Its looks like tomato juice is coming out of my tap,” she exclaimed.
According to this concerned citizen, residents in Nassau East have been complaining for years that the pipes in their area need to be changed.
She said that the water comes out of the tap looking rusty at least four days per week and that residents in the east feel neglected by the government.
Ms Major suggested that the rusty water problem is caused by old cast-iron pipes that were installed in the area some 30 years ago.
She claimed that she would always contact the Water and Sewage Emergency Unit for assistance when the water appeared rusty.
They would only drench the pipes but the problem is that the pipes need to be changed,” Ms Major said. She said that she has even reported the matter directly to the general manager of the Water and Sewerage Corporation.
Ms Major told The Tribune that she has lived in Nassau East for 13 years and as far as she knows, the area has suffered with the problem for at least 10 of those years.
She said that residents are tired of having to go to the local laundry-mart to wash their clothes and claimed that the rusty tap water has caused damage to her clothing.
Ms Major said that she has even had to resort to using “Aquapure” water for bathing and drinking.
She claimed that at one point, the problem got so bad that she had to drive to the Fox Hill public water-pump to get clean water.
“How am I supposed to wash clothes, bath and drink water that looks like this?” she asked. Ms Major stated that the residents in Nassau East are tired of “tomato-juice” tap water and they demand that the government look into the situation.
The Tribune attempted to speak with officials from Water and Sewerage, but up to press time no calls were returned.
