Bahamas Telecommunications Company is now, more than ever before, on the cutting edge of technology said Minister of Public Works and Utilities Bradley Roberts.
Yesterday BTC launched its 2006 Expo and Trade Show which runs until Wednesday. The show features exhibitors from both local and international companies, and the theme of the event is managing and impacting future technology.
The telecom giant has also given itself a six-month time frame to tie up any loose ends in its services to customers.
“It is fundamentally important to my government and to the Bahamian people that BTC puts in place world class technology that will support the anchor projects pronouncements of the government,” Mr Roberts said.
Further, he explained that it was “fundamentally important” that every Bahamian has access to telecommunication services that are both “cutting edge and affordable.”
BTC has also provided open forums over the last several weeks for customers to air their complaints about products and services – a move the company said would help it to improve. “BTC would solve all of your problems with GSM cellular network, from Abaco to Inagua, in six months,” said Gregory Bethell, chairman of the board of directors of BTC. “All of the gaps in customer service would have been fixed. Every single one. We will deal with some of the issues that have been lagging for a while,” he added.
Over the last few months BTC has been on an aggressive campaign to market a range of diverse products and services, which according to Mr Bethell has created much “hype” that the company intends to live up to.
According to a source close to the industry, competition on the market “has been the impetus for BTC to improve its image” and because of this, the company has received some positive feedback.
“I must say that over the last few months BTC has set the standard for marketing and public relations in this country with their aggressive and in your face marketing,” Mr Roberts pointed out.
He encouraged BTC’s management and staff to remain focused in delivering top-notch services. “Continue to use your creativity, innovation and skills to make this little Bahamas the best little country in the world,” Mr Roberts added. Although moving forward would require some adjustments, Mr Bethell indicated that BTC intends to rise to the challenge. “Ours is a challenge be-cause we have to do all of that under a spotlight where critics and detractors abound, but nevertheless, we are inspired to make a difference and we will make life better for our customers and for those who do business in The Bahamas,” Mr Bethell said.
