Bahamas Police Officer Murder Trial Delayed

A former policeman accused of the double murder of his estranged wife and her lover appeared in court yesterday but will have to wait until the new year before his trial begins.

Henry Hugh Smith Jr., 32 is accused of the July 2000 double murder of his estranged wife, 28-year-old Terah Smith, and her 52-year-old lover, Larry Dennis Fernander.

The Smiths had been married for five years and had two small children together.

Mrs. Smith, a mother of three, worked as a croupier at Atlantis and Mr. Fernander was the boss of a Nassau cleaning company.

The pair were shot to death in a house in the Love Beach area.

Mr. Fernander’s 10-year-old grandson hid in the bathroom while the murders took place.

Smith was apprehended in Atlanta, Georgia and extradited back to the Bahamas in October 2000.

His murder trial was to have begun yesterday, but prosecutor Jacqueline Foster requested a postponement.

Defence Attorney Murrio Ducille told Justice Longley that the case had already been postponed after two judges recused themselves and said he feared a further postonement would have to be made if the case did not begin soon.

A tentative date has been set for February 2005.
