An emergency election held at the Bahamas TaxiCab Union yesterday was branded “illegal” by the four officer President Leon Griffin is tryiing to oust from his unit.
Without the presence of the officers from the Ministry of Labour, the officers claimed Mr. Griffin’s election was against the union rules and they would not honour its outcome.
It was announced last month that on January 6, union members could decide the fate of Vice President Cheryl Fergusin, trustee Daniel Cleare, first vice president Sigmund Bethel and executive mark Sawyer. Ministry of Labour officials were to be present to make the election valid.
Senior Labour Inspector Theresa Johnson and an assistant arrived at the union building on Nassau Street at 9am on Thursday to conduct the elections. However, half an hour later they were instructed by the ministry to abandon the post, collect ballot boxes and leave the premises.
The confusion came at the end of a series of chaotic events that have plagued the union for more than a year. They include physical confrontations requiring police assistance, locks being changed on the building, court cases, and non-communictaion between the executives because of a lack of regular meetings.
Ms. Johnson did not provide an explanation of the incident yesterday.
