The Attorney General’s office announced over the weekend the formation of the Legal Aid Commission, which will look into the adequacy of the system of legal aid and advice in the Bahamas, and to make proposals for its advancement.
The new commission is in keeping with the present government’s mandate outlined in “Our Plan” which is to establish legal aid clinics to provide assistance to those who are unable to provide the necessary funding for appropriate defence before the court, a statement from the Attorney General said.
The commission will look to improve access to justice by reforming the system of legal aid so as to ensure that “justice has no price tag” in the Bahamas.
This legal aid and advice refers to a government funded and administered scheme designed to deliver legal services to those who are financially needy.
