Yet another Delay For Harrold Road Project

The Harrold Road Rehabilitation Project is facing yet another delay due to certain complications caused by a number of factors, according to one of the contractors carrying out the work.

The claim came despite a comment made by Minister of Works and Utilities Bradley Roberts on Tuesday that the work was moving on schedule. He had said earlier that the project was due to be completed on March 21.

The new proposed date for completion is slated for sometime in May, according to Stanley Bethel of Bethelᄡs Trucking.

Since then the contract was awarded to Bethelᄡs Trucking and Heavy Equipment and Bahamas Hot Mix, two Bahamian companies.

Mr. Bethel explained that the new contractors experienced a few hiccups in completing the project.

モBy May we should have everything completed because we ran into some difficulties with a lot of cavities,メ he explained. モRight now, we are putting in a sewer line in Yellow Elder which will connect the new subdivision that the Ministry of Housing is completing in Blue Hill Heights.メ

Project officials, meanwhile, continue to ask motorists using Harrold Road to exercise caution and to avoid the area where possible.

モOn the south side we will have to complete that before we can finish the northern side. We have to put another coat of hot mix on that side and also complete the landscaping and putting up the lights,メ Mr. Bethel said.

The project was initially scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, but was delayed because of setbacks caused by last Septemberᄡs hurricanes.

The project includes the reconstruction of approximately 1.5 miles of the existing two lanes and construction of two additional lanes on the north side of the existing carriageway; and the construction of approximately 0.3 miles of service road between Chapel Drive and Baillou Hill Road.

It also includes the reconstruction of the existing roundabout at the junction of Sir Milo Butler Highway, Bethel Avenue and Harrold Road; Construction of a new roundabout at Yellow Elder Way and Harrold Road; the installation of a state-of-the-art drainage system; sidewalks and other pedestrian facilities; the installation of street lighting; landscaping; and provision and maintenance of traffic management throughout the construction.
