The country recorded another traffic fatality on Saturday night just one day after a fatal collision claimed the life of 44-year-old Patricia Fox, an Adelaide Village resident.
The most recent mishap was the third serious traffic accident in three days.
According to police reports, Lester Mortimer Sr. was struck by a Mitsubishi Lancer, driven by off-duty police officer Terrance Thompson, around 9:05 pm Saturday as he attempted to cross the Cable Beach dual carriageway in the area of SuperClubs Breezes.
Police Chief Superintendent Hulan Hanna said Mr. Mortimer, retired operator of Mortimer Candy, sustained serious injuries in the mishap and died on the scene.
At the time of the incident the vehicle was being driven in an easterly direction by Terrance Thompson, an off duty police officer, Mr. Hanna said.
Just a little over 24 hours earlier, Ms. Fox succumbed to injuries sustained when she lost control of the 1986 Isuzu truck which she was driving and crashed into a utility pole on Carmichael Road.
On Thursday three motorists sustained serious injuries when the vehicle in which they were traveling careened out of control and collided with trees along the Sir Milo Butler highway.
The driver in that crash lost his foot, which was severed on impact.
Following Saturday’s fatality authorities appealed to motorists once again to exercise due care when traveling along the nation’s roadways.
“We want to again say to motorists and pedestrians as they ply the streets to do so with caution and with care,” Mr. Hanna said.
“We want to ask the motorists particularly to drive defensively and to be cognizant that they are not the only persons operating on the streets, but there are other motorists, pedestrians and road users. We also want to remind them that their actions ought to be consistent with the rules and regulations of the streets if not we will have carnage.”
Saturday’s traffic fatality pushed the total so far this year to 18.
