More Terror on Bahamas Jitney

The daylight robbery happened after the armed man fired two shots inside the bus. As passengers ran for their lives the robber grabbed $18 from the driver and fled.

The Public Transit Association is upset with the way the police handled the incident. According to the driver, officers never inspected the vehicle. Yet, two bullets were later found, one of which left a dent on the outside of the bus.

The driver, who asked to remain annonymous, said he was driving in the Blue Hill Road area around 4:00pm on Sunday when the incident occurred.

He said there were six to eight persons on board when he heard the words “Bus Stop!” He said someone approached him from behind.

“I felt when they leaned forward, but I thought they had stumbled when they came up to pay the fare. But, then he jumped up on the engine and told me to turn through a side street,” he said, noting that the robber had a chrome gun.

Concerned about the safety of his passengers, the driver did as he was told, pulled into a side street and stopped the bus. The passengers all jumped out and fled the scene.

The gunman then demanded money and fired two bullets into the bus near the gearbox before fleeing.

Following the incident, the driver went immediately to the Quakoo Street Police Station, where an officer took the report without examining the vehicle.

This is the third jitney horror story so far this year. The UK government has already issued a travel advisory regarding the unsafe environment on jitneys in New Providence.
