The Bahama Journal confirmed last night that Member of Parliament for St. Thomas More Frank Smith was stabbed several times in the back reportedly as he attempted to enter his eastern road home. Up to press time, Mr. Smith was said to be in stable condition at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Reports were sketchy, but Mr. Smith’s uncle, former Member of Parliament for Exuma, George Smith, told The Bahama Journal that he had received a report that his nephew had been stabbed during an apparent home invasion with robbery being the motive.
As news of the crime spread across the island, family members, friends, government officials and other officials of the Progressive Liberal Party, raced to hospital to check on Mr. Smith’s condition. As would be expected many of them expressed shock over the incident as they tried to gather details. Mr. Smith said that his nephew’s wife and young baby were uninjured. Frank Smith and his wife who is the daughter of businessman Franklyn Wilson and Senate President Sharon Wilson, became proud parents of a baby girl just over a month ago.
News of Mr. Smith’s hospitalization comes just over a week after government officials rushed to hospital after learning of Prime Minister Perry Christie’s illness. The Journal learnt that Mr. Christie was immediately notified of the stabbing. Police officials are expected to provide full details this morning.
