The 8th annual conference takes as its theme, “Passion, Pride, Performance ﾖ Power Tools for the 21st Century” .
Speaking on the topic of “The Impact of Expatriates” is Brendan Foulkes, founder and president, Hospitality Management Services Ltd.
Commenting on the impact of the foreigner in the work place, Mr. Foulkes states, “With all of the recent challenges in the various business sectors regarding this question of foreign/expatriate workers displacing Bahamians, we in The Bahamas must come to grips with some harsh realities.”
“Globalisation is on its way, in fact, as Grammy say, “It mussy done here, cuss I see all these outsiders all over da place,” he jokingly adds.
Therefore, according to Mr. Foulkes, the core question he seeks to answer is how do we embrace the inevitable and still retain a positive sense of patriotism?
Mr. Foulkes holds an Associates of Arts degree in Hospitality Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in International Hotel Management.
His tenure in the hospitality industry began as a Bus Boy in 1971, and included various positions such as Front Desk Clerk; General Manager; Managing Director; and Vice President of Marketing and Development for Island Outpost, Bahamas, where he led the construction and development of two properties ﾗ Compass Point in Nassau; and Pink Sands in Harbour Island, Eleuthera.
Mr. Foulkes’ all-around skills and wealth of industry experience and pertinent academic training, prompted him to open Hospitality Management Services Ltd., a Tourism/Hospitality Industry Consultancy Agency, in October 1997.
As a former director of the Bahamas Hotel Association; the Nassau Paradise Island Cable Beach Promotion Board; and the Bahamas Out Island Promotion Board, his many contributions to the industry have been invaluable. However, of note was his direct involvement in the “Adopt-A-School” programme sponsored then by the Bahamas Hotel Association.
