The explosion at Paradise Island on Sunday was caused by fireworks intended to put on a spectacular display at the US Embassy’s 4th of July celebrations last night.
This was confirmed by US Embassy spokesman Mike Taylor.
“The embassy hired an outside contractot to put on a fireworks show tonight at the ambassador’s residence as a part of our 4th of July Independence day celebrations.”
The explosion shook Paradise Island and parts of downtown Nassau, sending up a huge cloud of smoke.
“It is my understanding that the contractor and the fireworks planned to display at the ambassador’s residence were involved in a fire at Paradise Island,” said Mr. Taylor.
The contractor would have been responsible for the purchase, importation, and storing of the fireworks until it was time for the display.
