Freeport Woman Killed In Road Accident

Dead is Charlotte Anita Albury of Edinburgh Place, South Bahamia.

The two-vehicle collision police said claimed her life is one of four of this yearᄡs fatal accidents that have occurred on East Sunrise Highway, one of the islandᄡs major thoroughfares.

Authorities said the collision occurred at about 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of East Sunrise and Fortune Bay Drive.

It reportedly involved a flat bed truck owned by Kellyᄡs Freeport and driven by Christian Thompson, 25, and a blue BMW driven by the deceased.

Ms. Albury reportedly drove through the intersection onto the highway and into the path of the truck.

Police said the truck hit her car on the driverᄡs side, extensively damaging it and leaving the woman with multiple severe injuries.

She was rushed to the Rand Memorial Hospital where authorities said she succumbed to her injuries at around 11:22am.

Thompson and his passenger, Carvan Ferguson, of #49 Pioneerᄡs Way, walked away from the crash unscathed, authorities said.

So far this year, police said five males and three females have died on the islandᄡs roadways, compared to the total of nine people who died on the islandᄡs streets in 2004.

Six of the traffic fatalities this year occurred in two car collisions and all of those collisions occurred on East Sunrise Highway.

Last month, Marjorie Dean, 60, of Pioneerᄡs Way in Freeport became the islandᄡs seventh traffic fatality for the year, having died in hospital in New Providence from injuries she sustained in one of those collisions, according to authorities.

She was one of four Freeport residents police said were airlifted to New Providence with critical injuries. Her 2-year-old granddaughter, who was reportedly left fighting for her life following the crash, was also airlifted.

Last month, a nine-year-old Freeport boy was also left fighting for his life in hospital in New Providence after two cars collided in the Caravel Beach area in Freeport, subsequently striking him and his 12-year-old male friend he was walking with at the time of the accident.
