Hundreds of tons of industrial debris and garbage at Bonefish Pond, one of the four National Parks in New Probidence, has now been bulldozed into the pond.
On Tuesday the Supreme Court ordered Jerome Lafleur Senior and Junior as J & L Backhoe Crane and Rental, Payloader & Trucking Service, to cease all actiity at the site until a complaint filed by the bahamas National Trust can be heard.
However, when visiting the area yesterday, The Tribune saw a D8 bulldozer contiuing to push the debris into the pond. The bulldozer’s operator said he had been working in the area for almost a week, and was now fousing on excavating the site to remove the fill from the area.
Last week, the Trust held a press conference at the national park to draw the public’s attention to the problem. They used the opportunity to publicly ask that those responsible stop the industrial dumping. However, the dumping has continued and now the excavation of a national park has started.
It may be too late for the portion of land at Bonefish Pond that has been excavated and filled in with old cars, burned tyres, concrete, metal and other waste.
“We can’t restore that now,” said Eric Carey, the director of the parks and science liaison for the Trust, “that’s a destroyed part of the ecosystem. We need to make an example out of this individual and let them know that the Trust would not stand for the destruction of our national parks.”
