Violent Crime A Daily Occurance in The Bahamas

Police were following leads into the matter, the fifth murder in two weeks, coming only days after two Austrian tourists were discovered murdered in a hotel room in Bimini.

Police received reports around 9:30pm Monday about a shooting in the East Street area. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered Minnis’ body lying on the north side of Milton Street.

According to Superintendent of Police Glen Miller, one of the investigating officers, the victim had been shot in the chest, stomach and head.

Reports indicate that just prior to the slaying, Mr. Minnis had been involved in an altercation, police reported.

Mr. Minnis’ death was the 26 homicide for this year, so far.

It was only this past weekend that two Austrian tourists were discovered shot to death in a hotel room at the Anchorage Bimini Blue Water Resort. One of them had been bound and gagged.

Police investigations were also focused yesterday on solving an overnight armed robbery and stabbing.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for crime, Reginald Ferguson, one of the incidents occurred around 8:30pm Monday at the Golden Buddha Chinese Restaurant and Take-away.

Reports indicate that two unmasked men walked into the Collins Avenue establishment and held employees at bay. Police say the culprits escaped with $400 in cash.

Police yesterday were also called to the scene of a stabbing. The details are that Ladon Wilmott was in the Carmichael Road area when he was approached by a group of men, one of whom stabbed him several times.

Wilmott was subsequently taken to hospital, where his condition was last listed as “serious but not life threatening.”
