Tourists Robbed on Paradise Island, Bahamas

Police reported on Sunday that they had in custody the woman they believe drove the getaway car after two men reportedly robbed three tourists on Paradise Island in the early morning hours and took police on a high-speed car chase that ended in a smash-up.

Inspector Walter Evans said around 3am three female tourists, believed to be from New York, were in the area of Atlantis’ Marina Village on Paradise Island when they were accosted by two armed men who robbed them of cash and other personal items.

Police declined to say what the men were armed with. According to Inspector Evans, that information is an important part of their investigation.

Immediately following the robbery, he said a police unit on patrol in the area was notified and gave hot pursuit in a chase that led officers of the mobile patrol unit away from Paradise Island and into Nassau.

According to police, the get-away car was a rentend1994 gray Toyota Corolla. Police were withholding the license number.

“The vehicle crashed in the vicinity of Rosetta and Mackey streets. The two male occupants eluded police, but the driver of the vehicle is in police custody and all of the stolen items were recovered,” Inspector Evans said.

“We want to commend the officers involved on a successful operation in terms of retrieving those items.”

Police said they were following significant leads in the matter, trying to track down the person to whom the car was rented. Inspector Evans was unable to say if the driver sustained injuries in the accident.

“The search has to go out now for the two males who did the robbery,” he said.
