The United States Coast Guard on Tuesday sent two aircraft to assist in the search for a plane that is believed to have gone down in waters southeast of Bimini.
Police said that around 10:35 am the duty officer at Police Control in New Providence received information from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Base that the US Coast Guard was tracking an aircraft in the north western Bahamas, when it suddenly disappeared from the radar screen approximately 20 miles southeast of Bimini.
Police said that checks with both the New Providence and Grand Bahama control towers revealed that no mayday call had been received from any aircraft.
Police on Bimini and Great Harbour Cay in Berry Islands were notified, but were unable to launch any vessels to assist in the search due to rough seas in the wake of Hurricane Rita.
US Coast Guard officials reported that they suspended the search at 3:25 Tuesday afternoon. They were unsuccessful in finding the aircraft, police said.
