An illegal numbers house is operating next to the political headquarters office of Sports & Culture Minister Neville Wisdom, The Punch can reveal exclusively.
What’s more, PLP Delaporte MP Wisdom’s Flowerama shop and his house are also directly across the street from the numbers house. The numbers house– on West Bay Street near Sandals Hotel and the Hoffer Shopping Centre –is a branch of the RedHot Communlcatlon and WebShop chain. RedHot rent a booth in an Internet Cafe.
Punch purchased a ticket for a three-ball number. When Punch rang Wisdom’s HQ office to inquire about the numbers house, a member of his staff told us: “Oh, yes. You can buy numbers right next door.”
Many cops have reportedly complained to Police Chief Paul Farquharson that it is difficult for them to raid illegal numbers house because many of them are located next to or near the constituency offices or homes of PLP MPs.
The angry cops site the numbers house next to Wisdom’s political HQ as a prime example of how supposedly responsible politicians are making it difficult for police to keep law and order by allowing numbers houses to open near their businesses, offices and homes.
Many grassroot Revs have called on the Government to stop the alarmingly rapid spread of numbers houses disguised as Internet cafes.
The Revs are upset that the numbers cafes are also opening up next to their churches. The Revs are worried that members will spend their money on buying numbers instead of putting the cash in the church collection plates on Sundays.
Christian Council President Rev William Thompson is leading the call for a crackdown on numbers houses. But PM Perry Christie may get rid of numbers houses by introducing a national lottery game.
