The Bahamas Telecommunications Co. (BTC) is enlisting the help of Lucent Technologies to support the deployment of a high-speed 3G network in the Bahamas. The value of the deal was not disclosed.
Lucent has signed on to supply CDMA2000 1X and 1X EV-DO technology to enable the delivery of roaming voice and high-speed data services. As part of the agreement, Lucent also will supply Juniper Networks’ M-series Multiservice Edge routing platforms and Riverstone Networks’ MPLS-based carrier Ethernet routers.
The network will be deployed on the islands of New Providence, Grand Bahamas, Bimini, Eleuthera and Exuma and will deliver service to main towns, hotels, resorts and airports, according to the companies.
Lucent has been busy in the EV-DO market as of late. Last month alone, the company announced contract wins with Leap Wireless International and Brazilian mobile operator Vivo.
To date, Lucent has signed up 18 EV-DO customers, according to the company.
