Bahamasair Impasse Over $14.7 Million Budget Gap

Bahamasair general manager Paul Major admitted yesterday that he is not sure if a strategy to bridge the airline’s critical $14.7 million budget gap can be agreed between management and union officials.

Mr. Major said that union officials have only recently presented their recommendations for the strategy, nearly three weeks after the November 22 deadline set by Bahamasair management.

He said that even with the submission of the recommendations, management and the unions continue to disagree on the necessity of staff concessions for a successful strategy.

He said that Bahamasair has net with both the Airport, Airline And Allied Workers Union (AAAWU) and the Bahamas Airline Pilots Association (BAIPA) and is now considering the recommendations.

He estimated, however, that due to the impasse over the question of concessions, no progress would be announced before 2005.
