Migrants In Bahamas Complain Of Treatment

NASSAU, Bahamas — Cuban and Haitian migrants in a government detention center in Nassau, Bahamas, say they are regularly beaten while handcuffed.

The migrants also allege they are subjected to extortion, denied clean water and medical treatment, reported the Miami Herald Sunday.

The allegations were made to a Herald journalist when he visited the Carmichael Detention Center in the Bahamas.

Allegations of prisoners being forced to eat off the ground, the rape of two women and subjecting two Cuban men to mock executions, were also made to Amnesty International.

“We are not criminals,” David Martnez Perez told the Herald. “We didn’t commit a crime. We are immigrants. This is inhuman.”

Bahamian officials deny allegations of abuse.

“We are accommodating unwelcome strangers,” said Immigration Minister Vincent Peet.
