Police Probe Rape Allegation Against Bahamas Gov. Minister

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) – Police are investigating allegations that a government minister raped a woman, police said Wednesday.

Police said they questioned Minister of Works and Utilities Bradley Roberts on Tuesday but did not charge him.

A 47-year-old woman has accused Roberts of raping her in her Nassau home on December 4, her lawyer, Wallace Rolle, has said.

Roberts, 61, denied the allegations. He said he “voluntarily presented” himself to police and “submitted to a full and frank interview in response to the allegation. I answered each and every question asked of me by the police.”

“The allegation is baseless and without merit,” he added in a written statement Tuesday. “I am confident I will be exonerated.”

The Punch, a local bi-weekly tabloid, first published the allegations last Thursday. The opposition Free National Movement party called for Roberts to resign after the story broke.

Roberts, who is married, has been a member of parliament since 1982, and has served as chairman of the Bahamas Port Authority and the Bahamas Electricity Corporation.

The government has not commented on the allegations.
