Runway Lights Go Out In Eleuthera

Fort Lauderdale based Lynx Airways told The Tribune yesterday that it will not be attempting any more night flights into Eleuthera following an incident last Friday when it had to abort landing at Governor’s Harbour Airport because the runway lights went out.

This example, said one MP, highlights the damaging effect that the lack of upkeep at the airports on that island have on tourism, on which it is so dependent.

Spokesperson for the company, CA Sutherland said that despite arrangements being made, the airport was unable to accommodate Lynx Airways’ night flight.

MP for North Eleuthera Alvin Smith, said that the problems with the lights at the airport had manifested itslef for several months.

“A few months ago I was told that a Bahamasair flight in Governor’s Harbour was sitting in the terminal and the lights on the runway were off and when the plane was about to taxi out of the terminal onto the runway, the lights were turned back on. This simply cannot be the correct procedure,” he said.
