The Shell Saxons Superstars cut through the competition to win Friday’s Maureen Duvalier New Year’s Junkanoo Parade, swinging in their mock weapons in time with the drumline rhythm and invading Bay Street with a warrior-like fierceness in imitation of the Anglo-Saxons who invaded England in the 5th and 6th centureis.
The win for the 3,800-member group, out of Mason’s Addition, marked a “two-straight” victory for the Saxons, who also won the Boxing Day parade.
Saxons leader Percy “vola” Francis said the victories were all those fans who have been loyal to the group since it was formed in 1965.
Their two part theme: “Invasion of the Saxons – Dey Comin’ – Thank God for Forty Years of Excellence – Celebrating 40 Years” was portrayed with Viking inspired costumes and fighting style choreographics, securing awinning total score of 3,052 points, according to the unofficial results.
Saxons fan and former NBA star Rick Fox said he was impressed with the performance of the Saxons on Friday, and he was happy to be able to attend the event for the first time in many years, now that he is retired.
