An American tourist was killed and two others injured when the mast of their sailboat hit a power line, Bahamas police said Monday.
Donald McJerik, 47, of Sarasota, Florida, died Sunday at the Smith’s Bay clinic on Cat Island following the early morning accident, which also injured two other men on the boat, police inspector Walter Evans said.
The men were staying at the Greenwood Beach Resort in Port Howe and were trying to hoist the sail of a catamaran when the vessel’s mast hit an overhead power line, police said.
“It immediately knocked all three men unconscious,” Evans said.
The three men regained consciousness shortly afterward, but McJerik passed out again, Evans said.
He was taken to the clinic at Smith’s Bay where he died from his injuries. He had arrived in the Bahamas three days before the accident, police said.
The other two men were flown to Nassau where they were recovering at Princess Margaret Hospital, police said. Their conditions were not believed to be serious. Authorities refused to release their identities.
