It is estimated that a minimum of 20 metric tons of cocaine may have passed through the Bahamas in 2004, the recently released US International Narcotics Control Strategy Report indicated.
The report said that in 2004, law enforcement officials identified on average a suspicious go-fast type boat in Bahamian waters every five days. In addition, there were 90 drug smuggling aircraft detected over the Bahamian territory.
Bahamian and US officials estimate that there are currently 12 major Bahamian drug trafficking organisations operating in the country.
