An investigation has been launched after an American tourist was sexually assaulted over the weekend, police confirmed yesterday.
The attack was reported to have taken place when the 21-year-old victim accepted a ride outside Senor Frog’s restaurant and bar in the hours between Friday night and Saturday morning.
Chief Supt. Marvin Dames said the victim had not been able to tell police where the attack occurred as she is unfamiliar with the island.
According to Mr. Dames, the attacker is thought to be a Bahamian who is “certainly not a taxi-driver” but who may have been one of the “hackers” that have a been a concern for the police and licensed taxi-drivers in the past.
Mr. Dames said there have been 13 allegations of rape in the country so far this year, slightly down from the same period last year.
Crime and corruption in the Bahamas is rapidly destroying the tourism industry. The United States government has already issued a warning to Spring Breakers informing them that the Bahamas is not a safe place. The UK government has gone as far as an actual travel advisory against vacationing in the Bahamas.
