Customs Under Investigation For Corruption

An internal review has been launched in the Customs Department as officials investigate more than $250,000 worth of vehicles, boats and other items in North Andros last week.

Customs officials said that internal reviews are being made and individuals investigated about these items that were “under-priced or uncustomed goods”.

A reliable source in North Andros said that the seizure is simply the tip of the iceberg as abuses of Customs collections have been going on for more than 10 years in that area.

“There is a ring or a syndicate in Andros just bringing in these shipments from the United States and sending them through to New Providence unchecked.

“We have shipments coming in wrapped in black tape labeled as bleach but in fact are pallets and pallets of beer or rum. This car thing is only the latest one. People have been staying in one position down here too long. They believe they can do anything over here. We are in trouble down here in Andros,” he said.
