Residents of Great Guana Cay in Abaco yesterday said that they feel their rights have been disrespected because they have not even been allowed to see a copy of the heads of agreement for the project.
About three dozen of the area’s 150 local residents flew to Nassau yesterday to stage a peaceful protest in Rawson Square as the Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers arrived for their weekly meeting.
Attorney Fred Smith is representing the residents in their bid to stop government from allowing the Passerine Company to develop a golf course, gated community and 240-slip marina in the area at a cost of $400 million. If completed the marina would be the largest in the country.
The residents have launched an all-out protest against the project. “The people of Guana Cay have a right to be heard, the government is obliged to take into account their view,” said Fred Smith.
They say if it is completed the golf course woul kill the reef that is just 50 feet offshore and the dredging for the proposed marina would destroy the 70-plus acres of mangrove, fish estuary and further compromise the land.
