An alleged indecent assault on a seven-year-old schoolgirl was thwarted on Tuesday after scores of Nassau Street residents came to the child’s rescue.
The grade three student was reportedly making her way to school sometime around 8:15am when she was preyed upon by a male walking in the area.
A police spokesman at the South Street police station told The Guardian that the student was walking in the vicinity of Nassau Street and Boyd Road near the Super Value food store, when she was approached by a male who initially asked her for money. “After she declined, he tried to hold on to her, but concerned citizens stopped the would-be attack on this child”.
The police identified the attacker as 31-year-old Cecil McPhee. He said McPhee was held by residents until police were summoned to the scene. The police spokesman said the male was assaulted by residents who also made an attempt to cover his body with navy blue paint. He said McPhee was “happy” when police arrived to rescue him from the attacks of residents.
