Yacht Club Row: Peet Steps In

Labour Minister Vincent Peet met with parties involved in the ongoing Nassau Yacht Club labour dispute yesterday afternoon, Th Tribune has learned.

The dispute, which centres on the termination of 11 workers last Friday, has led to three days of protests outside the private club.

The employees were dismissed on Friday morning in what one union official called ” a serious offence under the law”.

According to Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union general secretary, Leo Douglas, the management of the Yacht Club notified the employees of their termination while contract negotiations were still underway.

This, he said, is a violation of the regulations governing labour relations.

Mr. Douglas said that union officials expected management to communicate its position on negotiations on Friday but instead workers arrived at the club to be informed of their dismissal.

Mr. Douglas hopes Minister Peet’s decision to become involved in the matter will lead to the swift resolution of the dispute.
