At a recent meeting of the Golden Gates constituency association of the Free National Movement, Mr. Bethel said that while there is tremendous opportunity for a realistic, practical and well thought out investment in Cable Beach, the project agreed to by the government does not accomplish this.
The official Heads of Agreement for the development was signed last week after the Baha Mar investment consortium announced it had signeda new agreement with Phillip Ruffin to acquire hos properties.
Construction, scheduled to begin in 2007, will affect the properties on which the Radisson Cable Beach Resort, The Nassau Beach Hotel and the Wyndham Nassau Resort and Crystal Palace Casino are currently located.
Mr. Bethel claimed that it is unacceptable for the government to “give away Crown land to foreign investors, because the land belongs to the Bahamian people.
He said if the property sold in the Cable Beach deal is Crown land then the Bahamian people should be given equity shares in the project.
Mr. Bethel said the proposed project will cause enormous disruption to traffic flow and will effectively segregate cable Beach from the rest of Nassau.
