Residents of Cat Cay, a private island in the Bimini chain, allegedly owe the Bahamas treasury more than $1.8 million in back taxes and custom duties, and have only 60 days to pay.
Trade and Industry Minister Leslie Miller said residents have until July 1 to clear the debt, which includes real property taxes and unpaid customs duties. Mr. Miller, who also owes considerable back taxes and utility fees did not mention when he would pay his own arrears.
The disclosure came as Mr. Miller was refuting claims made by Manuel Diaz, president of Cat Cay Yacht Club, during a heated meeting last month.
But Mr. Miller said that, after an investigation, he figures their true contribution to be less than $2 million a year. Apparently, that is not enough money to warrant respect or protect against victimization from the Bahamas PLP government.
