The Sounds of Society Degenerating

Four men were charged on Thursday before Magistrate Linda Virgill with two counts of extortion to which they pleaded not guilty.

The men who are reportedly District Constables for the St. Cecelia Urban Renewal Project are Antonio Jamal Bain, 20, of, Comfort Street; Cardinal Marshall, 18, of Union Village; Jamal Rolle, 25, of Peter Street and Tyrone Davis Jr., 26, of Coconut Grove.

Police say that the men extorted $95 from Dennis Ingraham on April 23. On the same date it is alleged that the group extorted $16 from Paul Bethel.

Each was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 with two sureties. The case will continue on Sept. 8.

Fraud by false pretences

In other court news, Garrison Nottage of Ethel Street, Montel Heights appeared before Magistrate Marilyn Meeres of Court 5 accused of fraud by false pretences.

It is alleged that the 35-year-old defrauded Jamaal Johnson of $4,500 by means of false pretences on Feb. 16.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of $5,000. The case was adjourned to July 26.

Armed robbery, kidnapping

Meantime, two 16-year-old boys appeared in the juvenile court before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez accused of armed robbery, kidnapping, receiving and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

One of the accused resides at Acklins Street, while the other is a resident of Munson Village.

Police say that the boys, while armed with a handgun on April 29 robbed Cleveland Bethel of a white 1995 Nissan Sunny valued at $6,000.

Further it is alleged that they kidnapped Mr Bethel and received the car.

The last count against them alleged that they possessed a nine-millimeter pistol without being in possession of a special licence.

The accused were not required to plead to the charge and remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

They will re-appear before the juvenile court on May 31.
