Baha Mar Development Company today announced that a Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued to identify a primary Bahamian architectural design firm that will develop the conceptual identity for a new commercial village at Baha Mar. The mixed-use complex will house corporate and Government offices and retail structures currently situated opposite the resort strip in a relocation exercise that paves the way for the diversion of West Bay Street. The village is scheduled to open in Fall 2006.
Executive Vice President of Design and Development, John Kristich, confirmed that seven reputable Bahamian architectural design firms have responded favourably to the invitation, which includes establishing the overall design development of the entire commercial complex.
“Baha Mar is expected to create a world-class resort and gaming destination in The Bahamas that will be uniquely Bahamian in character, beginning with the design, and we are excited for this opportunity to rely on Bahamian expertise in the creative process,” said Mr Kristich. “This offer goes beyond a Bahamian architect’s stamp on a set of plans οΎ– the invitation is for a full complement of architectural services.”
The scope of the project in this phase comprises the design of nearly 200,000 sq-ft of office and retail space and procurement and coordination of local building and specialty design consultants. Mr Kristich said, “The commercial Village is an integral part of our vision as it is the hub of cultural and economic activity. Every effort will be made to incorporate life and charm that is appropriate and natural to the city of Nassau and the Islands of The Bahamas.”
Baha Mar Vice President of Administration and External Relations, Robert ‘Sandy’ Sands, added: “Awarding this contract will be a particularly important decision because of the high visibility of the project and the significance of this component to Baha Mar’s commitment to creating an authentic product in The Bahamas. In this regard, the commercial village will be designed by Bahamians, built by Bahamians, occupied by Bahamian businesses and easily accessible to the Bahamian public and visitors.” Sands advised that the contract(s) would be awarded by mid-August.
