The Brass and Leather Shop and His and Hers Jeans, just two doors apart in the Abaco Shopping Centre on Don McKay Blvd., were able to have the broken windows replaced before the end of the day.
Edwin Sands, owner of His and Hers Jeans, said the front door’s glass also collapsed as a result of the impact from the smashed display window. Mr. Sands said it looked like one or two pairs of jeans might have been stolen.
It was the second time in less than two weeks that a break-in occurred at his store, Mr. Sands said, and over $500 worth of merchandise stolen. The police still have not arrested anyone for that crime.
ļ¾ During that same weekend, the front glass door to Burn’s House Liquor Store in the same vicinity on Don Mackay Blvd. was smashed-in with a rock.
Veronica Saunders, manager of Brass and Leather was unavailable for comment, but a clerk in the store said no items had apparently been stolen.
No senior officer of the police was available for comment on these latest criminal acts, but ASP Miller, officer-in-charge of Abaco, told The Freeport News on Monday that the force in Abaco was concerned with the recent spate of break-ins in the downtown Marsh Harbour area and in the Pelican Shores residential community, and was devising means to apprehend the culprits.
Mr. Sands said the only thing he can suggest is for the police to introduce foot patrols at night around the stores and in the neighbourhoods affected. He said he had no complaints, however, about police response so far to the incidents.
An elderly couple on Pelican Shores, whose home was broken into late last week, were quite shaken over the discovery that someone had entered their house while they were asleep in the bedroom and they had heard nothing. They said they were relieved, however, not to have been harmed.
