FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – A 94-year-old woman became the island’s 14th traffic fatality this week, prompting police to reiterate stern traffic warnings as the death occurred just two days after an East Grand Bahama man was killed in a car crash.
Police said Armilda Laing succumbed to serious injuries she sustained when the vehicle she was a passenger in collided with another car at the intersection of East Sunrise Highway and Balao Road.
Police said speed was the main factor in the crash which was the latest in a series of fatal car accidents on East Sunrise Highway – one of the island’s major thoroughfares.
At about 7:55pm Wednesday, Travis Wilmott, 25, was driving a 2000 Ford Focus East along the highway and Eudeen Hield, 69, was driving a 1992 Chevy Cavalier North on Balao when the two vehicles collided, according to authorities.
Police said Wilmott escaped uninjured, but Mrs. Hield and Ms. Laing both sustained injuries and were rushed to the Rand Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Hield was treated and later released, but Ms. Laing died in hospital at around 9:40p.m, authorities said.
On Monday, Michael Cooper, 37, died when the car police said he was speeding in crashed into and uprooted a utility pole in East Grand Bahama.
Just under two weeks ago, a woman and her unborn child were killed when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed into a tree.
These latest accidents prompted police to urge residents to slow down and drive with due care and attention on the island’s streets.
