On the occasion of the Grand Bahama Port Authority’s 50th anniversary celebrations, 19 new college and university scholarships have been awarded to selected applicants.
The Port Authority’s Scholarship Foundation is also continuing its maintenance of 78 existing scholarships for the 2005/2006 academic year.
Scholarships are awarded to Bahamian residents of Grand Bahama, on the basis of merit and need and are tenable at fully accredited colleges and universities in The Bahamas, the United States of America, and Canada as well as the University of The West Indies for the Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degree programmes, a release issued by the Port Authority noted.
“The Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited and Group Companies continues to play a major role in promoting the social and educational well-being of the people of Grand Bahama and is particularly proud to have issued over 1,000 scholarships to students since the inception of this programme,” the release said.
“This year we continue that emphasis, with new scholarships being awarded in accounting; bio-chemistry; bio-medical engineering; education; economics; chemical, cvil, electrical, and mechanical engineering; finance; foreign languages; history; mathematics; medical technology; nursing; and psychology.”
Over the years, the Port Authority has offered scholarships in areas of study which they see as being of maximum benefit to the development of The Bahamas.
To qualify, applicants must have a minimum of five B.G.C.S.E.s with passes in mathematics and English language with a C grade or above and a current cumulative grade point average of 3.00, which must be maintained to keep the scholarship.
The 78 students whose scholarships are being renewed are studying the above disciplines as well as architecture, biology, commercial art, culinary arts, and forensic science, the released disclosed.
The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Freeport Harbour, Grand Bahama Power Company, and The Grand Bahama Development Company congratulated successful applicants for September, 2005.
Some of these applicants include Freeport Anglican High School graduate Kent Saunders, who is attending Benedict College and is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, and Sunland Baptist Academy graduate Keitra Taylor, who will be attending Claflin University and is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in sociology.
Congratulations were also extended to students who are presently being assisted by the Scholarship Foundation with their Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degrees and the 15 students who were assisted over the past four years by the Scholarship Foundation and recently graduated with their Associate’s and Bachelor’s Degrees.
