The Bahamas Consulate General Office in Miami, Florida has been closed until further notice due to the passage of Hurricane Wilma, which knocked out power and phone lines to the Second Avenue offices, government announced yesterday.
The storm slammed across Florida in about seven hours Monday, causing several billion dollars in insured damage and leaving six million people without electricity, according to US news reports. It is predicted that it could take days or weeks for things to get back to normal in certain parts of the state.
Bahamian citizens seeking assistance should contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New Providence at (242) 302-9300 or the Bahamian Embassy in Washington DC at (202) 319-2660 thru 7.
All employees of the Consulate General in Miami are accounted for and operations are expected to resume once power and phone services have been restored, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
