An email is circulating among well-heeled Bahamians calling for an immediate response from the government to stop the rapes and robberies that have become a part of every day life in Nassau, Bahamas.
The email, written by a well respected Nassau real estate agent, details at least a half-dozen violent crimes that have occurred in Nassau, in just the past week alone. ᅠThese crimes were not isolated incidents, nor did they occur in “bad” neighborhoods. Rather, two rapes and two robberies occurred along Eastern Road, the exclusive section of Nassau that is home to some of the wealthiest of Bahamians.
Two armed robberies also occurred on Bay Street, along Cable Beach, Nassau’s most heavily populated tourist strip.
A prominent Bahamian family was robbed at gun point at their home in Winton.
In another incident, which also occurred in the past week, one of the wealthiest businessman in Nassau and his wife were robbed at gun point at their home in Montague. Their dog was shot at, although it was not determined if the animal was killed. It is fortunate that it wasn’t the businessman or his wife who were shot at.
Two separate restaurants, both on Cable Beach, were robbed in the past week, on different nights. Armed robbers stormed into Cappricios on one night and Indigos another night, robbing the staff and customers, many of whom were tourists.
Two women were raped in the last week alone, one in Blair, regarded as one of the “safest” subdivisions in Nassau, the other in the upscale Eastern Road area.
The author of the alarming email warns her fellow citizens to “please watch yourself — spread the word to friends and family!
“These people are crazy and will rob and rape you – no joke. ᅠThese are sick crazy people! ᅠBe careful — even in the parking lots – i’ve heard about women being robbed in Harbour Bay parking lot.”
There is no mention in the email about warning tourists, but it is understood that a formal request has been made to the US State Department to issue a Traveler’s Advisory against US citizens visiting Nassau until the Bahamas government responds to the crisis.
Regarding the email, a concerned Bahamian writes: “These crimes are getting closer to home! ᅠI fear for my life — I watch my back constantly.
“And I go to bed at night wondering if some thug – or a gang of thugs will come into my home and rape me! ᅠI would rather they kill me instead!
What a thing to think about hey — but it’s the truth – because it’s REAL!
“I notice that PM Perry Christie is on the email list….. hmmm…I truly hope that he will address these issues.”
That remains to be seen.
