Deputy to the Governor General the Hon. Paul L. Adderley, acting on the advice of the Judicial and Legal Service Commission, has appointed the Hon. Justice Anita Allen a Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of The Bahamas.
The announcement was made recently, but it took effect on October 1.
In her curriculum vitae, Mrs. Allen said her objective is “to give competent and efficient judicial service to The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.”
She was appointed justice of the Supreme Court in 1996; and chairperson of the Public Service Board of Appeal this year.
Mrs. Allen was managing partner of Allen, Allen & Company from 1989 to 1996. She was an associate at Unwala, Leonard & Company from 1988 to 1989; an associate at Paton, Toothe and Company between 1986 and 1988; and also served as assistant crown counsel, crown counsel, and legal draftsman.
Between 1973 and 1986, Mrs. Allen was the principal legal draftsman at the Department of Legal Affairs and the Attorney General’s Office.
She has also been exposed to many different courses in the judicial field and provided service to several professional organizations, including the Civil Task Force appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1998, serving as chairperson until 2000.
Mrs. Allen was also the co-chairperson of the Bahamas Integrated Justice System after being appointed by the prime minister in 2001.
She was treasurer of The Bahamas Bar Association in 1990.
Mrs. Allen is also active in her community, having served as director and trustee of St. Andrews School; a vestry member of Christ Church Cathedral; a charter member of Zonta Club of Nassau; a council member of the Swimming Federation of The Bahamas; a girl guide leader at Christ Church Cathedral Company; and a choir member a the cathedral.
She is the recipient of Zonta’s Living Legends Award for law, which was awarded in 2000.
Mrs. Allen, the wife of former Cabinet Minister Algernon Allen, enjoys cooking and traveling.
They have four children: Algernon Jr., Antoine, Aliya (who was recently called to the Bar), Amil, and Phylicia.
