Fears Live Dolphins To Be Exported

Animal rights campaigners have fears for a pod of live dolphins, which they believe is due to be exported from the Solomon Islands.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) says sources have told them 40 dolphins will be flown to the Bahamas this week, via Fiji, Tahiti and Mexico.

WSPA believes the exportation goes against an international convention, to which the Bahamas is a signatory and flies in the face of a Solomon Islands ban on dolphin exports.

The organisation’s New Zealand spokesperson Kim Muncaster says dolphins are wanted for shows and the global trade is lucrative, but inherently cruel.

WSPA wants the Solomon Islands to enforce its ban and is lobbying Fiji, Tahiti and Mexico to reject the cargo.
