Stretching out a vibrant agenda until August 3, the ‘Junkanoo in the Street’ festival is held every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and features an amazing array of Grand Bahamian cuisine, arts and crafts and vendors bearing various treats, all geared toward enriching the Bahamian identity.
The Bahamian fete also accentuates cultural demonstrations such as sisal plaiting, conch cracking, Bahamian dance competitions and Bahamian fashions. Entertainers include Little Joe Cartwright, Dry Bread, Wilfred Solomon, Audley Edden, Priscilla Rollins, Mango Man and Methice Rigby who is being backed up by The Just Friends Band.
More entertainment is provided by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Marching Band and a Rickshaw ride through a Bahamian historical lifestyle, which would allow children to engage themselves in Bahamian games, snacks or spend a quiet moment at the Story Porch.
Several important events will also be marked at the Junkanoo gala this summer. June 23 οΎ– 25 will be identified as Dol-fan Fest, a proposed weekend fun with Miami Dolphin Football Players, Alumni and Cheerleaders.
The 12th Annual Grand Bahama Island Regatta will also compliment the festival and will be held on Taino Beach.
But the grand finale of The Junkanoo Summer Festival will come on August 7 and will be held on Explorer’s Way.
This is when the Junkanoo extravaganza, dubbed “Feel The Rush,” will take place.
Reflecting a national event that also takes place in Abaco, Exuma and Nassau The Junkanoo Summer Festival will be a colourful calendar of activities motivated to attract additional visitors to stores, and highlight daily activities for both its residents and tourists.
The Grand Bahama Festival Committee is spawned by The Ministry of Tourism, and continues to work toward the growth of high-spirited heritage on Grand Bahama Island.
The Junkanoo Summer Festival is sponsored by Bahamas Telecommunic-ations Corporation, The International Bazaar Owners Association, Sunny Isles, Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute, Donald Archer and The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board.
