Film Festival Honours Icon

The Bahamian Film festival began yesterday at Galleria Cinemas on John R Kennedy Drive. It is being held in memory of the late Bahamian cultural icon, Mrs Kayla Lockhart Edwards, who died recently.

The festival is a four-day event Which will showcase a host of international and local stars parading their given crafts. The festivities will commence with a press conference, followed by the premier of the movie ‘The Survivor.’ This film highlights aspects of the life of a cancer survivor who had a double mastectomy and the issues surrounding her love life. The movie is scheduled to be shown at 8:30 p.m. shortly after the official opening ceremony and is produced by Celi Moss, President of the Bahamas Film Society and organiser of The Bahamas Film Festival.

President of The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, Mr Terry Fountain, said that he was pleased that Mr Moss chose to highlight such a timely topic and that at the end of the movie, he hopes it will cause many persons in the Bahamian society to discuss the importance, of screenings for other types of cancer. A three-day filmmakers workshop is scheduled for Thursday August 10 through Saturday August 12, 2006.

“Pitch your Movie” Session is scheduled for Friday. Anyone attending The Festival can approach organisers with their movie ideas. On Friday, the Committee will welcome Mr Jeff Friday, CEO of The American Black Film Festival and The Black Movie Awards.
