Police have taken three male juveniles, all residents of Lucaya into custody, in connection with the recent spate of armed robberies and burglaries in which Romanian employees of the Grand Bahama Shipyard were targeted.
These three suspects are presently assisting police with their investigations into this and other matters.
According to reports at about 4:30 on Thursday, August 31, two masked men, one armed with a handgun, forced their way into a house on Ferry Horse Lane, Seahorse Village and robbed the three Romanian occupants, who are employees of the Grand Bahama Shipyard of an undetermined amount of cash, passports and other personal items.
Police say that shortly before that incident, the same two culprits were suspected of robbing four Bulgarian nationals, also employed at the Shipyard, inside their residence, of passports, money and other items.
[BahamasB2B Editor’s Note: During the filming of the Disney movie, “The Pirates of The Caribbean”, cast and crew members were robbed so manty times, one of them issued an international press release to condemn the activity. It is typical for Bahamians, many of whom have an anti-foreign attitude, to specifically target foreigners for crime, making many tourists and foreigners wary of travelling to The Bahamas.]
In other news, the sister of Grand Bahama Member of Parliament Pleasant Bridgewater was discovered lying lifeless on her bedroom floor over the weekend.
According to reports, 36-year-old Johanna Mackey was discovered by her husband, Corporal 1569 Garvin Mackey, lying face down on their bedroom floor without any vital signs.
Police say officers were dispatched to the residence of their colleague early Sunday morning following the sudden death of his wife.
Emergency Medical Personnel were also dispatched to the home, where Mackey was officially pronounced dead.
Authorities say that the deceased was said to be in good spirits when she retired to bed around 11 o’clock the night before.
Police do not suspect foul play in this matter; however, Mackey’s is the second sudden death reported in Grand Bahama within the last four days.
The first was 48-year-old Road Traffic Supervisor Alexander Gibson, who passed away in his sleep at about 3 a.m. on Friday.
Reports stated that Gibson had suffered from hypertension in the past but there was no indication of any health problems in days leading to his demise.
In fact Gibson had just completed a full tour of duties on Thursday, August 31, 2006 and co-workers said that he appeared to be in fine spirits and good health at the time.
