Pair Charged With Robbing Expatriates

The pair was formally arraigned in a Freeport Magistrate’s court on Wednesday in connection with the recent spate of armed robberies and burglaries targeting expatriate employees of the Grand Bahama Shipyard.

Shawn Alexander Parotti, 23, and Edley Eldmekio Sweeting Jr., 21, were not required to enter a plea to the indictable armed robbery and receiving charges.

Police say that sometime around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 10, 2006, 23-year-old Romanian national Apostol Gigi reported to officers at the Port Lucaya Police station that he had just been held up and robbed by two males in a grey car, while walking to his residence on Ferryhorse Lane in Seahorse Village.

Particulars alleged that while in the vicinity of Commonwealth Bank in the Seahorse Shopping Plaza, the grey car pulled up alongside Gigi and a co-worker, and one of the occupants allegedly got out of the car armed with a knife and robbed him of an undetermined amount of cash and personal items.

Reports further state that the culprit then got back into the vehicle and fled the scene.

The pair were remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison, Fox Hill, until October 31, 2006 when a trial is expected to begin.
