More than three weeks after he was involved in a fight with Kennedy MP Kenyatta Gibson, Mount Moriah MP Keod Smith has announced plans to speak to the press on the matter.
Mr. Smith said he will hold a press conference in the House of Assembly on Wednesday morning, just before parliament meets.
“At that time I will make certain pronouncements as to my political future as it relates to matters arising from the reported incident involving Mr. Kenyatta Gibson, MP and me on the 27th September, A.D. 2006,” Mr. Smith said, but he did not reveal any further details on what he plans to say.
Some government officials and PLP insiders are hoping that Prime Minister Perry Christie does not allow Mr. Smith to make his statement before he, as prime minister, addresses the issue publicly.
Since the altercation, there has been a lot of speculation about Mr. Smith resigning as chairman of the Bahamas Environment Science and Technology Commission, and Mr. Gibson resigning as chairman of the Gaming Board.
But the prime minister has made no announcements in this regard, and has declined to answer reportersメ questions on the issue.
After the press reported that the altercation had taken place in the Cabinet Office, the prime minister did tell the Bahama Journal that he was aware of a disagreement between Mr. Gibson and Mr. Smith, but he said the three of them had laughed about the matter and that he had received no reports of a fight taking place.
Mr. Gibson and Mr. Smith both appeared as guests on the Love 97 programme, “Jones and Company”, two weeks ago and denied that they had been involved in a physical altercation and assured that they had buried the hatchet and were political allies and personal friends.
