Murder Accused Is Freed

When Archer returned to a Freeport Magistrate court yesterday morning for the continuation of his preliminary inquiry, the prosecution, which closed its case yesterday, was not able to establish a prima facie case against him and he was granted dismissal on those grounds by Magistrate Helen Jones.

Shurland said he is very pleased with the outcome of the Inquiry, which started back in April, 2006.

According to reports, around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 police received several calls from residents in the Somerville Drive neighbourhood, who reported hearing gunshots being fired.

Uniformed and plainclothes officers who responded found Martin lying face-up on the ground, just inside the gate of his front yard, suffering from gunshot wounds to his face, neck and torso.

Martin succumbed to injuries several days later.

Police believe that the shooting was a drug-related matter because officers recovered a quantity of cocaine from the scene.

Archer initially was represented by attorney K. Brian Hanna and was originally charged with attempted murder, but after Martin’s death the charge was upgraded.

In other news from the courts, 35-year-old Ashley Allen Grant of #126 Cabot Drive pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Grant, who appeared before Magistrate Subu Lasalle was fined $6,000 or two years imprisonment on each count.
