Visitor Arrested On Drug Charges Gets Heavy Fine

An American visitor who was arrested at the Lucayan Harbour on Monday, October 2, 2006, after being found with a quantity of dangerous drugs was formally arraigned in a Freeport Magistrate's court yesterday.

Modesto Rosado, 32, of #7637 Tropicana street, Miramar Florida, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Sabu Lasalle, to possession of dangerous drugs with the intent to supply and taking preparatory steps to export the drugs from the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.

Particulars allege that at about 4:15 p.m. on the day in question an alert K-9 unit officer discovered one and a quarter pounds of packaged cocaine concealed inside Rosado's underwear.

Rosado was represented by attorney K. Brian Hanna. Following a mitigation submission from his attorney, he was fined $10,000 or two years in prison on each charge to run concurrently in the event the fine is not paid.

No criminal charges were brought against his 23-year old female companion, who was released from custody.

In other news, police are busy investigating the island's latest armed robbery incident.

Police say that at about 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, two dark males, one armed with a silver handgun, walked into Bain's Rental Office, situated in the Bain Building, West Atlantic Drive, and robbed the establishment of an undetermined amount of cash.

The two culprits fled the scene on foot, before police were alerted about the incident.

No one was injured during th ordeal. Officers at the Central Detective Unit are actively investigating this matter.
