Career Criminal Acquitted on Rape Charges

It is no wonder crime is out-of-control in The Bahamas.

A 38-year-old man was acquitted of the rape of a 17-year-old girl yesterday.

After two hours of deliberations, a jury of seven women and two men unanimously found Modesta Colebrooke not guilty of the rape of the teenage girl.

Prosecutors alleged that in September 2008, Colebrooke took the girl, whom he knew, to Blue Hill Heights and had sex with her against her will in his car.

Colebrooke, who represented himself at his rape trial before Justice Vera Watkins, admitted to having sex with the girl but claimed that it had been consensual.

Colebrooke thanked the jury after the not guilty verdict was announced.

Despite his acquittal, he will remain on remand at Her Majesty’s Prison as he has another case pending in the Magistrates Court.

Colebrooke shouted: “Thank God,” as he was escorted back to the Central Police Station after the verdict was handed down.

Sandra Dee Gardiner prosecuted the case.
