Biometric Cards Would Reduce Voter Fraud

Sea Breeze Member of Parliament Carl Bethel said yesterday that the time has come for the “flimsy” voter’s cards currently being used in the country to be retired and replaced by biometric identification cards.

Bethel, who was contributing to debate on the proposed amendments to the Parliamentary Elections Act in the House of Assembly, argued that the move would make it harder for voter fraud to be committed.

Bethel, who is chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), also argued that The Bahamas should move towards the establishment of a permanent register.

Currently, the Parliamentary Registration Department issues colored paper cards with photos to those who register to vote and a new register is created at each general election.
